Leaders: The HCTC Method - Three steps to create Honest Conversations with your team
Jun 11, 2025
Hello World,
Today I want to talk about my HCTC method to help you build solid foundation in your leadership style.
I know that being a leader- boss is not always easy.
But hey! What a cool honor it is!
And I also know that often, we are not fully prepared, however, the great news is that with commitment, good intention and awareness these simple and powerful steps to follow can make a difference in a leadership style and of course in how we are perceived by our team.
So, after more than 20 years in the HR World, these are the elements that I have seen employees consistently claim are what break the trust and cause them deception, frustration, and pain when working or leaving a company.
Yes, it is related to Leadership.
Lack of honesty, congruency or timely communication.
So, let's come back to the basics.
Here are three things that increase your chances that an employee wants to work with you.
#1: Honesty - It is what it is. (At least by now)
Here's how it works:
- Step 1: Do an objective review of your company's situation.
- Step 2: Tell your real challenges and opportunities.
- Step 3: Tell how you operate (tools and work style specially if you have new members on your team – and yes often, acknowledge your leadership style is a relief for your team – this makes you look more real – meaning you are doing your best).
#2: Congruency - Do not do crazy things than do not make sense.
Here's how it works:
- Step 1: Do not talk too much or make promises. Better do.
- Step 2: Watch and take care of your small behaviors. This point is crucial, especially regarding how you manage the resources and your communication with the team.
#3: Timely Communication - If the boat is sinking or there is no wind ahead, your crew needs to know.
Here's how it works:
- Step 1: Generally, employees do not like surprises, so you must be fast to anticipate the news and share it as promptly as possible.
- Step 2: Listen to your crew and do your best to analyze and understand their opinions or emotions.
- Step 3: Keep your team posted about any changes, improvements or help needed. Because if you are honest and congruent and have timely communication with your team, you are doing your best as a boss, then it is highly probable that your team will learn from you and response to you in the same manner. So, trust your team!
Do these three things, and you'll be on your way to creating a solid foundation for your company and leadership style.
And even better, the chances that you fully enjoy your role as leader will be higher.
The key is to do your best to consistently apply these steps:
H + C + TC = Solid Leadership Foundation
Be honest, congruent and timely communicator.
That's it for now! I trust you can!
For your success
