The Hiring Dilemma: To hire or to not hire
May 27, 2025
Hello World!
It was not that Romeo and Juliet crossed my mind, or I was eating a Chocolate bar, that this blog came to my mind.
Reality, is, that A good beginning of a workplace relationship is priceless. And a hiring decision is big!
Because it is a big commitment to hire someone and bring a new employee to your company!
So, today I am going to share my version of the Hiring Dilemma.
To Hire or To Not Hire.
And why is it a dilemma?
Well, the dilemma comes at the intersection of desire and reality.
For all those that have read me before (By the way, Thank Youuu!). You know that I am a big fan and promoter of creating and having Honest Conversations in the HR World.
And, Money, it is a damn biggggg and crucial topic.
Money – Budget.
Work as a deal breaker.
I have seen that especially in the recruiting world clients or candidates often feel uncomfortable when this question arises.
I think I have shared this, but for real, I can feel the discomfort, the pauses, the unnecessary explanations or justifications, the change of topics, etc.
But, hey, we need to ask you.
What salary are you ready to offer?
What is your budget?
Is it any budget?
And if you are honest in your answer, it is highly probable that we can find the best solution, even if is not to hire someone at this precise moment.
If you are a company, you need to be realistic about the performance of your business, because it should be based on it, that you should make the decision to hire or to not hire someone.
It is not because you need someone to save your business or because you wish to have help or because your business have potential.
No, no, no.
Because, being honest, it is not that you do not wish to have a big team, at the end of the day, it is a business decision linked to Money in the first part.
Because Money – it is your budget.
Maybe you like it and feel proud about it.
Or maybe you do not like it and feel not proud about it.
But it is, what it is, at least at the moment.
So, this blog, is dedicated to all entrepreneurs, small and medium sized business and well, of course, for my loyal corporate readers, yes, I included you here, but the difference is that if you are not responsible directly for bringing the money to the business this maybe do not hit home so close. Anyhow, to all of you, I feel your struggles and I see your ambition to do more, but today, I want to invite you to think first in you, for your peace of mind and heart. I invite you to being honest and analyze if your company is really are ready to hire someone.
The big lesson behind this, is that if your business can consistently afford and commit to a payroll of a new employee, then. YES! Do it! Absolutely you have permission to hire.
But if for the contrary your business is not consistent in terms of money – meaning revenue. Then, please, please do yourself and others a favor and do not commit to hire someone. At least by now, the performance of your business improves.
Because if you do, the story is highly probable that do not end well for one of the parties.
And remember, I am here, to tell you my honest opinion, and I know you maybe are going to ask me, but Hey Ivonne, are not you a Headhunting – Recruiting Firm? And Yes, I am!
But I am also your HR Firm! And I am here for your success in the long run.
So, if you are ready to hire someone yes! Let’s do it!
Three check points:
- Consistent money – revenue to invest in payroll.
- Capacity and commitment to on board a new team member successfully.
- Your business is stable or growing.
If you put a checkmark on these checkpoints. Congrats! Your business is ready to hire and yes! You have attained Permission to Hire!
Yay! Yess! Siii Con todo!
I want that you hire, just when you are ready, because you really can meet the expectations of the candidate that you will invite to your team without any stress or nightmares for you as a business owner, entrepreneur, executive.
We have a saying in Spanish, that goes like this. “Con la nomina, no se juega” let’s say “Do not play (mess) with the payroll” and not because religious or something but it should be treated as “sacred”. Meaning you never mess with it, you respect and commit, because no matter what happens in your business on payday, well, it is a payday.
So Timing is important as:
- Full Commitment to on board someone and pay consistently.
- To help also the person grow.
- And yes, together, grow.
This should be a win – win relationship.
And if you hire on the right time, with the right conditions, your probabilities to succeed are higher.
So, having this in mind, here is my Permission To Hire / Success Matrix!
Look for your quadrant, and then you will find the Yess or the Noo!
My big wish for you and your employees is that you set your company and your team for success, since the second one that you decide to bring someone on board.
So, let’s go!
For your success,
Ivonne Feizy
